Stoops brothers headline United Way event

The United Way of the Mahoning Valley hosted its 11th annual "Champions Among Us" fundraiser Monday evening at The Lake Club.

POLAND, Ohio (WKBN) – The United Way of the Mahoning Valley hosted its 11th annual “Champions Among Us” fundraiser Monday evening. The event was held at the Lake Club in Poland.

This year’s guests of honor were the Stoops Brothers.  The valley natives and Cardinal Mooney products have excelled in the college football coaching ranks for years.

Bob Stoops is the head coach at Oklahoma.

“Southside guys so many of us, right there in the heart of Youngstown, are a major part of who we are. And to me the best part of the year is whenever i get to come back for a few days,” said Bob Stoops.

Mike Stoops serves as the Sooners’ Defensive Coordinator.

“Our father was the #1 inspiration, you know a lot of what we have been able to accomplish. And certainly you know our playing for the “Little Redmen” and those coaches, Coach Bucci you know, just driving through Mooney. I think it just brings back a lot of great memories,” Mike Stoops said.

Meanwhile, Mark Stoops is the head coach at Kentucky…while Ron is the Special Teams Coordinator at YSU. And they couldn’t be happier to be back home here in the Valley.

“I had to work for everything that I had and all that no one is going to give you anything in this business. But I certainly had some good people to look up to.”
