Chester, new K9 officer in Sharon, starts first day on duty

The duo's regular shift will be Tuesday through Saturday from 6:30 p.m. until 2:30 a.m.

The new police dog started his first day on duty in Sharon.

SHARON, Pa. (WKBN) – Sharon Police Department’s newest member, a K9 officer named Chester, started work patrolling the streets.

The 17-month-old canine joined his handler, Officer Steve Winans, for the first time Tuesday night.

“He enjoys going to training, he gets a little amped up a little more,” Winans said. “He understands what the car is already, he gets excited when he’s in the car. You can tell he’s ready to go to work.”

Chester will be used in everyday patrol work, though he is also well-versed in searches.

“He’s trained on the methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin and marijuana, to detect those drugs…He’s certified to do tracking, that would be anything from suspect of armed robberies to a missing person or missing child.”

In March, The Learning Dog in Hubbard donated enough to the police department to purchase Chester a protective vest. When the vest is available, it will be a piece of equipment that comes in very handy.

“It’ll be good to know that he has the same protection we do available to him.”

The vest is not the only thing keeping Chester safe. Winans’ patrol car also has features to protect the dog.

“Heat control sensors…so if it gets too hot, the car will let me know it’s getting too hot so he’s comfortable the whole time.”

Even with heat control, Winans says he will check the car from time to time to make sure the heating system doesn’t malfunction.

The duo’s regular shift will be Tuesday through Saturday from 6:30 p.m. until 2:30 a.m.
