LEAVITTSBURG, Ohio (WKBN) – Five fire departments worked for several hours Tuesday afternoon to contain a brush fire near a welding shop in Leavittsburg.

The fire started just after 2:15 p.m. near McCall’s Welding shop on W. Market Street, off the Route 5 bypass. Owner Larry McCall said he was welding with his son when a spark ignited the brush fire behind his home and shop.

“We were…trying to get a wheel off an axel and that’s what caused this whole mess. It was some brush and next thing you know, it was out of control,” he said.

According to fire officials, everything in McCall’s backyard was engulfed in flames by the time they arrived.

“We got called for a structure fire. When we got here, it ended up being trash burning, cars, railroad ties and just miscellaneous trash,” said Warren Township Fire Chief Ken Schick.

The McCall family lives about 400 feet away from where the fire first started.

They say there was no damage to their home or business, but the flames did melt some siding on the back of the garage. It also tore a hole through a trailer that was parked in the back.

“The fire just burned the side of the garage and no, nobody was injured,” Schick said.

“Just a little bit of the siding melted off, so that was about it. It was just a bunch of junk, nothing important,” McCall said.

Everything in the backyard is being considered a total loss.
