‘Missing’ Hanoverton man withdraws guilty plea to making false alarms

A pretrial has been set for June 21

James Artrup, 27, pleaded guilty to making false alarms, saying he "didn't know what else to do" in a video arraignment on Monday, later stressing that he would plead guilty after questioning by the judge.

LISBON, Ohio (WKBN) – The Guilford Lake fisherman who police found after an extensive search last week has decided to change his plea.

James Artrup, Jr., withdrew his guilty plea in Columbiana County Municipal Court on Monday, according to court records. He pleaded not guilty to making false alarms and was joined by an attorney.

Artrup originally pleaded guilty last week to making false alarms without an attorney present.

A large-scale search for Artrup was conducted after his girlfriend called police to report that he hadn’t returned from a fishing trip. Police used a dog and sonar boats to try and find Artrup in Guilford Lake after his girlfriend found his fishing pole and tackle box near the shore.

Investigators said Artrup was found safe at a female co-worker’s home. She had called off work earlier that day.

A pretrial has been set for June 21.
