YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Two Youngstown State University football players are facing firearms charges after police heard shots fired near the Wick Avenue parking deck.

Casimier Mitchell, 19, and Lee Wright, 21, are charged with improper handling of a firearm.

The charges stem from an incident early Sunday morning when an officer sitting in his cruiser heard shots fired near the parking deck. Seconds later, a black Ford Mustang filled with three men who were laughing drove by the officer, according to a police report.

Police noted that no other vehicles or people were in the area, and the officer began an investigation into the vehicle and its occupants.

Mitchell was initially charged. Prosecutors later filed charges against Wright.

Both players are linebackers with the Penguins and under a scholarship with the team. Wright is a recent transfer from Appalachia State, while Mitchell is a red shirt freshman.

Both will remain with the team for now but will not be allowed to participate in any drills while their cases are pending.
