South Range advances to State in 12-inning thriller

The Raiders defeated Northwestern, 1-0, Saturday and move on to their first State Tournament in school history.

Massillon, OH (WKBN) – The South Range softball team defeated Northwestern, 1-0 in 12 innings Saturday in a Division III Regional Final.

Pitching was the story most of the game, thanks to South Range junior Caragyn Yanek and Northwestern freshman Hannah Fricke.

Yanek finished with 10 strikeouts, giving up just two hits and two walks, while Fricke threw 19 strikeouts with 4 hits.

The Raiders stayed in the game thanks to great defense and finally broke through in the bottom of the 12th inning. Cori Taylor drove in Taylor Ross to score the game’s only run.

South Ranges advances to their first State Tournament in school history next Thursday. The Raiders will face Milan Edison at 5:30 PM at Akron Firestone Stadium.
