NILES, Ohio (WKBN) – Ohio State Troopers were out in full force on Sunday for the Can the Cruiser Event.

Troopers were collecting non-perishable items and canned goods in order to support the food pantry of Niles Community Services.

People could be found donating at the Niles Sparkle Market and at Macali’s Giant Eagle also in Niles.

As one store owner said, they hope it is successful because the need keeps growing more and more every day.

“Well, we serve over 700 families and 1,100 individuals monthly. We are the only source of help for the people in Niles, Weathersfield, McDonald, and most of the churches refer to us. It’s the only source of help here,” said Eric Gelsemino, owner of the Niles Sparkle Market.

Eric said the Can the Cruiser event started in May and there is a good chance it will turn into an annual thing.
