SALEM, Ohio (WKBN) – Just two days after Memorial Day, Dick Paulini returned to his veteran father-in-law’s grave to find the flowers he placed there were stolen.
Both his father-in-law and mother-in-law are buried at Hope Cemetery in Salem. Paulini said this is the second year in a row that the items they put on the grave were stolen.
This year, a large pot filled with white flowers was taken.
Paulini said he called the director of the cemetery and was told it happens all of the time and there is no way to stop the thefts.
“It isn’t just stealing from the dead, it’s stealing from a World War II veteran,” Paulini said. “I’m commander of the Amvets Post 45 here in Salem, and I’m involved in the cemetery services for Memorial Day, and anytime somebody messes with a veteran, it’s not right.”
The cemetery director said police drive around the cemetery twice a day, but there isn’t much more that he can do as far as security.
