She was born April 23, 1930, in Youngstown, the daughter of Vincent and Catherine Walsh Wittenauer.

For the past 63 years, Bernice shared the joy of life together with her high school sweetheart, her husband, Byron W. Harnishfeger Jr.

Bernice was a graduate of Boardman High School and was very honored and proudly continued her studies at the Youngstown Hospital School of Nursing, receiving her degree in 1951.

She then became employed at the Youngstown Hospital Association as a registered nurse.

Bernice remained home as a mother and homemaker, raising her five children in their early years, and returned to her nursing career at St. Elizabeth Hospital for 20 years until her retirement in 1987.

She was an active member of her parish, St. Michael’s Church in Canfield, serving in the Alter and Rosary Society and also serving on various other church committees. Bernice enjoyed extensive travels with her husband throughout all 50 states as well as international cruises. Camping was always enjoyed with family, and she spent endless instructional hours baking with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Another joy for Bernice was attending various grandchildren¹s sporting and school activities.

She is survived by her husband, Byron “Bud” Harnishfeger; three daughters, Denise Harnishfeger of Hubbard, Phyllis (Mike) Manning of Westlake Village, Calif., and Agnes (Jeffery) Schauer of Round Hill, Va.; and one son, Byron W. (Beth) Harnishfeger III of Boardman. She will be missed by her seven grandchildren, Dr. Jennifer (Patrick) O¹Brien, Byron W.
