Youngstown man charged with stealing dog from Mahoning Co. Pound

Maurice Preston is charged with theft

The Mahoning County Pound recovered a dog that was stolen from the facility.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A man has been charged with the theft of a dog from the Mahoning County Dog Pound.

Maurice Preston, of Youngstown, is charged with a misdemeanor theft charge.

Investigators say Preston was captured on surveillance video entering the pound and stealing a 3-year-old pit bull named Elliot on May 20. He did not complete the adoption procedure or pay for the dog.

Investigators said the pit bull was found in the basement of a Youngstown home on June 3. People living in the home told police that they had purchased the dog on the street for $400, but the dog pound’s office did not believe the story and the animal was seized.

An investigation was completed following the dog’s recovery, and police said Preston admitted to the theft.

Police have not yet arrested Preston and are waiting for him to turn himself in.
