MASON, Ohio (AP) – The Warren County Sheriff’s Office says a man accused of shooting a sheriff’s deputy and the suspect’s father at an apartment complex in Deerfield Township may have discarded an assault rifle, and residents should contact police if they find it.

Authorities say the AK-47 believed used by 19-year-old Mohammed Abdou Laghaoui in Thursday’s shooting could be concealed in a piece of clothing, tossed in a flower bed or wooded area or hidden in an unlocked shed. It isn’t known if the weapon is still loaded.

The Sheriff’s Office says Deputy Katie Barnes was responding to a domestic situation at an apartment complex when she was shot in the abdomen. She’s expected to recover. The suspect’s father was shot in the hand.

Laghaoui is facing preliminary charges that include attempted murder.
