ORLANDO (MEDIA GENERAL) – The suspect in what is now the worst mass shooting in U.S. history has been identified as Omar Mateen.
Investigators say Mateen is a 29-year-old U.S.-born citizen who lived in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
He opened fire at Pulse Nightclub, a gay club in Orlando, Florida, shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday. At least 50 people have been confirmed dead and 53 more are injured, many of whom are listed in critical condition. Mateen is among the dead.
Mateen worked as a private security guard in Florida.
According to law enforcement officials, his parents were born in Afghanistan and he was on the FBI’s “radar” though not the target of a specific investigation.
Multiple outlets are reporting the gunman called 911 just prior to the shooting, telling the 911 operator he has declared his allegiance to the head of the Islamic State.
His father, Mir Seddique, expressed shock and apologized for the incident in an interview with NBC News, stating he wasn’t aware of anything his son might have been planning.
Seddique did note his son got angry when he saw two men kissing in Miami a couple of months ago and thinks that may be related to the shooting.
