YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – When spending a lot of time in the sun, sunscreen is important for skin health.
Shopping for sunscreen can be a challenge with so many products on the market to choose.
The sun protection factor, or SPF, is important, but there is more to consider than just the degree of protection.
“You don’t necessarily need a hundred, or plus, plus, plus SPF. What you need is a broad spectrum one that’s going to cover UVA as well as that designation for the UVB with the SPF,” said Dr. Amy Kassouf, a dermatologist with the Cleveland Clinic.
SPF only measures protection against UVB rays, and SPF between 30 and 50 is recommended.
The best kind of sunscreen to use is one that has both a broad spectrum coverage, meaning that it covers both UVA and UVB rays with a proper degree of SPF.
UVB rays burn the skin. UVA rays can cause skin cancer.
Take the time to read the whole label to make sure it provides what is necessary. Reapply sunscreen after being outside a while because it does wear off.
