AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Twenty-six local athletes packed up a bus Friday morning in Austintown and took off for Columbus.
The Mahoning County Board of Developmental Disabilities Special Olympians are competing in the Special Olympics Summer Games at The Ohio State University against 3,000 athletes from across the state. The athletes will be competing in volleyball and track.
Organizer David Grossman said they have been training all year and are ready to take the field.
“This weekend is about friendships, teamwork, playing together, celebrating their sport and athletes competing and doing their best and becoming champions,” he said.
Grossman said his group has competed in the Summer Games for more than 12 years and has brought back medals every time.
The group will return to the Leonard Kurtz School in Austintown Sunday night. The Austintown Police and Fire departments, Highway Patrol and the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office are expected to greet the team as they return, around 6 or 6:30 p.m.
