Austintown mourns loss of firefighter

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The Austintown community is mourning the loss of a firefighter who died while on duty at one of the township’s station houses.

John Fritz, 48, died Monday in his sleep at Station House No. 1 on Route 46.

Dispatchers suspected something was wrong when Fritz didn’t answer a call around 7 a.m. Monday.

Fritz leaves behind a wife and five children ages five to 16 years old.

A cause of death has not been determined yet.

All services will be held at Austintown Fitch High School in the auditorium.

Calling hours are July 1 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a Fire Department vehicle drive-by at 8 p.m.

Funeral services are July 2 at 10 a.m. after 9 a.m. calling hours. The procession will leave the high school directly after the funeral and head to Tod Homestead Cemetery in Youngstown.
