CAMPBELL, Ohio – Services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at the L.E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home for Mrs. Mary Lou Hayes Govan, 95, of Campbell, Ohio, formerly of Brooklyn, NY, who passed away July 12 at the age of 95.
Mary was born April 9, 1921 in Brownsville, South Carolina, a proud daughter of Zannie McRae and Viola Miles. Mary was the eldest of six children. She attended Brownsville School and cared for her sisters and brothers while her mother worked.
In 1947 at the age of 26, she moved to Brooklyn, New York while she worked at Blake Clothing as a machine operator for many years until retiring.
She married Raymond Govan in 1963, and he passed away in 1968.
She married Lonnie Hayes in 1987 and he passed away in 2002.
She leaves to forever cherish her memory, her sister and caregiver, Annie Hall of Youngstown with whom she made her home; a brother, Johnnie Pierce of Campbell; goddaughter, Leona Robinson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Zannie; mother, Viola Gadson Miles; brothers, James McCrae, Hubert Gadson, Hardy Pierce, and Walter R. Miles; sister, Geneva Bevly, step-sister, Helen Miles; step-brother, Henry Miles; and sister-in-law, Helen Miles; two special cousins, Josephine Dismore and Robert Campbell.
