Grocery store submits proposal to buy old Austintown Middle School

The vacant school is a big concern for those living in Austintown Township

The Meijer grocery store chain submitted a proposal to purchase the old Austintown Middle School.

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Meijer submitted a proposal Wednesday to buy the old Austintown Middle School, according to Township Zoning Inspector Darren Cirvelli.

The grocery store chain has to go through a series of public hearings before the purchase is approved.

Cirvelli says the vacant school is a big concern for those living in the township.

“The question that we get the most is, ‘When is something going to be done with that school?’ We want to see that school torn down, we want to see a project there that creates interest in the retail corridor and this would clearly do that.”

Meijer expects a delay in construction because this is one of many projects in the area. Cirvelli says they hope the store opens in 2019.
