SHARON, Penn. (WKBN) – Sharon hosted the 10th WaterFire event on Saturday.
Anthony Delgros is the Land Operations Coordinator for WaterFire, and he said some things were completely new to the event this year.
“A lot of things are different this year. We have a new director, and she has decided to make things more intimate on the land. We have three separate stages, we have more intimate bands. We have a lot more entertainment; almost every hours, we have a different band on each stage,” Delgros said.
The changes have made a difference.
“We have an absolutely fantastic crowd. In fact, it might be one of the biggest crowds we’ve had in three years. Heat and weather didn’t keep anybody away today. I mean, this is absolutely a great crowd,” Delgros said.
One of the highlights of WaterFire is the lighting of the braziers in the Shenango River. M. Spogga Hashway has been a firedancer at this event for three years. He said he loves performing here.
“Yeah, it’s great to be here. It’s hard to get me to leave New Orleans where I live, so it’s nice to have Sharon, PA have me come out to this,” Hashway said.
Lady Liberty is another WaterFire favorite, and she interacts with people as they walk past.
George and Anne Martini went to WaterFire for the first time. They went to support a friend who was an artist at the festival but said they were excited to see the fire show.
“It’s got to be beautiful with the fire and the water, and I’m looking forward to it after dark,” Martini said.
They said their experience had been great, and they will be back for more.
“We’ll definitely come back, ‘cause I know my friend will be here with her spray paint art, and, plus, I’m sure she’ll want to do some shopping and buying,” Martini said.
