POLAND, Ohio – There will be prayers at 9:15 a.m. Monday at Fox Funeral Home followed by a Funeral Service at 10:00 a.m. at Christ Our Savior (St. Nicholas) Church in Struthers for Joseph P. Smith, 90 who passed away Tuesday morning at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boardman.
Joseph was born August 10, 1925 in Youngstown, a son of Elias and Eva Smith and was a lifelong area resident.
He graduated from South High School and enlisted in the United States Navy. He served as a Gunner’s Mate Third Class during WWII in which he received the World War II Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Medal and American Area Medal.
Joseph worked as a produce manager for Krogers and retired from IGA in 1988.
He was a long time parishioner of Christ Our Savior Church and belonged to the Kirby and YLSA clubs.
Joseph’s favorite things was spending time with his family, especially after retirement spending the days with his buddies, Jarod and Kyle; dancing with his granddaughter Lisa at her wedding; grandson Larry moving from Florida to attend YSU and living with him for the first year and the birth of his great-grandson Luke.
His wife Philomena Antronica whom he married June 16, 1948, died on May, 22, 2015, just short of celebrating their 67th wedding anniversary.
He will be greatly missed by his son Lawrence E. ( Tina Hudson) Smith of Coral Springs, Florida; his daughter Patricia A. (Joe) Anda of Poland ; four grandchildren Lisa (John) Watson of Holly Springs, N.C., Lawrence J. Smith of Mogadore, Jarod Anda of Howland, Kyle Anda of Poland, a great grandson Luke Watson of Holly Springs, N.C.; a brother-in-law Sam (Pauline) Antronica of Boardman; a sister-in-law Lois Antronica of Poland; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife and parents, Joseph was preceded in death by a son Dr. Joseph P. Smith, Jr., his daughter-in-law Lynne Sue Smith; five brothers, Al, Jack, Samuel, Edward Sr. and Charles Smith; four sisters, Rose Barak, Mary Rotar, Dorothy Smith, Juanita Walko.
Friends may call from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the Fox Funeral Home, Boardman.
