Last blast furnace remains standing in Warren

The furnace on the RG Steel property will have to be broken apart in a less destructive way before it is sold for scrap

The blast furnace at the RG Steel property in Warren cannot be brought down with dynamite.

WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) – The blast furnace on the RG Steel property in Warren is still standing Monday.

The furnace can’t be brought down with dynamite because it is connected to a powerhouse that is still in operation for Arcelor Mittal. The connection involves pipes, wiring and large cables that are still attached.

The blast furnace will have to be broken apart in a less destructive way before it is sold for scrap.

The red tape marking off areas for abatement has been picked up, so that phase should already be complete.

Called an icon of the steel industry, the blast furnace in Warren is the last remaining in the area.
