CHARDON, Ohio (WKBN) – A three-vehicle crash in Geauga County injured a state trooper Friday, according to Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Sergeant Jim Smith, 52, pulled someone over on State Route 322 east of Auburn Road for a traffic violation just before 11 a.m.

Troopers said Smith was outside of his patrol car talking to the driver, when an SUV hit the back of the patrol car, pushing it into the car that was pulled over.

Smith was thrown into a ditch and the driver of the car was also injured. They were both taken to the hospital for treatment and released later in the day.

Highway Patrol said the SUV’s driver, 80-year-old James Martin, of Highland Heights, suffered minor injuries.

All three cars were heavily damaged. The lights on Smith’s patrol car were on at the time of the crash, according to Highway Patrol.

The crash is still under investigation and no charges have been filed.
