HUBBARD, Ohio (WKBN) – Almost 200 pairs of shoes were given away Monday to students in kindergarten though 12th grade as part of a Hubbard church’s free tennis shoe ministry.
Shoes of any size or color lined the tables at Chestnut Ridge Church. Volunteer Sue Burns says they are extremely busy the first couple of hours on the first day.
“This is a way we can help our community in some way,” Pastor Robert McFarland said.
Organizers made it their mission to fulfill any special needs or requests the kids had.
“After this is over today, Pastor and I will go and purchase more shoes for tomorrow’s giveaway,” Burns said.
McFarland says simply giving away free shoes can really make a difference in people’s lives.
“I’ve had moms tell me, ‘This is the first time I’ve been able to send all five of my kids to school with new tennis shoes on.'”
For some parents, it is an overwhelming experience knowing their child will have a brand new pair of shoes to start the school year.
“It is a blessing to have a chance to get some help getting the kids what they need for school, and shoes are a big priority,” Cassandra Arci said.
The free tennis shoe ministry will continue Tuesday from 10 a.m. until noon. To participate, the child must be with a parent or guardian, who needs to show identification and proof of residency or a current utility bill.
