WASHINGTON, D.C. (CNN) – Conservatives have recruited former CIA staffer and top House Republican aide to launch an independent White House bid.

Evan McMullin announced his candidacy Monday. He spoke with CNN about why he decided to jump into the race.

He will face high hurdles in the form of ballot access deadlines that have already passed in many states. McMullin will, however, offer anti-Trump conservatives an alternative.
