NILES, Ohio (WKBN) – Former Cleveland Indians top draft pick Brady Aiken is heading to pitch for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. He is slated to make the start Wednesday night against Batavia.
Aiken, listed as the #59 overall prospect in Baseball America’s Top 100, was selected #17 overall in the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft. The left-hander was previously selected #1 overall by Houston back in 2014. Medical issues caused a standoff with the Astros, opening the door for Cleveland to select him a year later.
The 19-year-old was originally drafted out of Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego, California. Aiken did not pitch in 2015 due to an arm injury that required Tommy John surgery.
Aiken has appeared in nine games (8 starts) this season in rookie ball with the Arizona League Indians. He has posted a record of 0-4 with a 7.13 ERA. In 24 innings, he has allowed 19 earned runs on 32 hits, with 35 strikeouts.
Wednesday night’s first pitch against the Muckdogs is slated for 7PM at Eastwood Field.
