LIBERTY, Ohio (WKBN) – Police said a man accidentally shot himself in the hand while trying to defend his sister during a domestic violence situation.

The man was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Warren for treatment.

Liberty Police reported finding blood on the driveway leading to a Goleta Avenue home where the alleged assault occurred on Saturday. A woman at the home told police that she was fighting with her boyfriend, 22-year-old Freeman Dobyne. After kicking him out of the house, she said Dobyne went through the screen door and wooden man door from the garage to the home, cutting his arm “to the meat and bone.”

Police said there was a large amount of blood inside the home near the door leading to the garage and in the driveway. The screen door was destroyed and a window in the wooden door had been punched out.

It was at that time that the woman’s brother grabbed the gun and attempted to render it into a safe condition when he accidentally discharged it into his hand, according to a police report.

Dobyne, who was also taken to the hospital for his injuries, was charged with domestic violence and aggravated burglary.

A warrant for his arrest was issued Monday, and a temporary protection order was filed.
