YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 18, 2016 at the Tabernacle Baptist Church for Mrs. Bessie Louise Ervin, 79, of Youngstown, who entered eternal rest on Wednesday, August 10, 2016, with her family at her side.
Mrs. Ervin was born April 12, 1937 in Anderson, South Carolina, a daughter of Roosevelt and Georgia L. Plantin Smith.
She was a graduate of The Rayen School and attended Youngstown College.
Bessie worked as a supervisor for Mahoning Job and Family Services (formerly Department of Human Services) for many years, retiring in the late 1990’s. She was also employed as funeral attendant for the L. E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home.
A member of Tabernacle Baptist Church since September 1949, she organized the Young Adult Ushers, the Young Nurse’s Guild, and the Mass Choir, Adult choir, Junior Church, Hospitality and Consolation Committees. She was the coordinator for the Women’s Day. She was also a member of the 2005 church anniversary committee. She was also a member of the N.A.A.C.P.; past president of the Southside Neighborhood Watch and its Weed and Seed Program; breast cancer survivors support group; various bowling leagues. Bessie enjoyed cooking, sewing and was known for her “Hankies by Bessie”; and loved to go on social trips.
Her husband, Vernon Lee, whom she married January 8, 1954, passed away July 20, 1980.
She leaves to forever cherish her memory, five children, Charles Ervin, Janet Green, Karen L. Ervin and Carolyn J. “Cookie” Ervin all of Youngstown, and Sharon J. Ervin of Atlanta, Georgia; three grandchildren, Glenn, Sha’Ron, and Shanquah; Dana Lee Hardy, whom she raised like a granddaughter; eight great grandchildren; two brothers, Thomas L. Smith and William R. Smith both of Youngstown; three sisters-in-law, Antionette Smith, Betty Clark, and Helena Barnes; a dear friend, Pearl Williams; her church and funeral home family; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Vernon L. Ervin, Jr.; a daughter, Diane M. Sims; a brother, Jefferson L. Smith, Sr. and her sister, Rosie Walls.
