Newton Falls looking for new fire chief, former hire doesn’t qualify

Recent hire Anita Smith's training credentials would not transfer over from Nevada, where she worked

Newton Falls Fire District

NEWTON FALLS, Ohio (WKBN)  – The Newton Falls Joint Fire District is looking for a new fire chief because the chief hired earlier this year did not have the credentials needed to work in Ohio.

Newton Township Trustee John Nemet said candidate Anita Smith’s firefighter credentials from Nevada would not transfer to Ohio. Smith was hired on the condition that the credentials would transfer over. She would have been the first female fire chief in Trumbull County.

The fire department is now accepting new applications for the position. Smith can also reapply once she receives the necessary firefighter training qualifications, Nemet said.

The applications will be reviewed at a 6:30 p.m. Aug. 30 board meeting. They hope to have someone hired by mid-September.

The search began after long-time chief Richard Bauman retired in May.
