CORTLAND, Ohio – Anne Pachas, 94, formerly Sophia Anka, died Saturday, August 13, 2016 at Park Vista of Youngstown.
Anne, the second youngest of five children, was born March 3, 1922, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Sreta and Kata (Varga) Smaic, parents of Serbian and Hungarian descent.
Anne, received her Master’s Degree in Education and become a 5th grade teacher.
Anne volunteered at the American Red Cross, and she taught English to immigrants.
Her two passions were painting and gardening where she enjoyed great proficiency. Anne served as docent at the Butler, and was a member of the Trumbull County Master Gardeners. She also was active in the cultivation of the Apline section of the Research and Education Gardens for the OSU Extension at the Agriculture and Family Center.
Besides her parents, Anne is preceded in death by her husband, the love of her life, the former Constantine “Gus” Pachos. Gus and Anne moved to Homosassa Springs, Florida, where they lived on a riverfront home that Gus designed. They were avid sponge divers, and enjoyed taking their small motor boat into the Gulf of Mexico.
She is survived by her six adoring, loving and accomplished nephews, Gary, Vaugh, Dejan, Andrijan, Zoran and Wayne.
A memorial service will be held, Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Shafer-Winans Chapel, 164 N. High St. Cortland, with Pastor Jack Acri celebrating Anne’s life.
