YMCA hosts Youngstown Community Cup to get people outside

The next set of Community Cup events will start Friday, August 26

More than 25 businesses from around the Valley got together for the 27th annual Youngstown Community Cup.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – More than 25 businesses from around the Valley got together Saturday for some healthy competition at the 27th annual Youngstown Community Cup.

The event is being held during three separate weekends and features 18 different events, from kickball to bocce.

The Community Cup is sponsored by the YMCA of Youngstown as a way to get people moving.

“The YMCA incorporates around that spirit, mind and body, and it’s just a great collaboration to get everybody together and just have fun and get physical instead of sitting on the couch,” said Julie Walker, assistant director of the Community Cup.

Event goers said they enjoyed the competition.

“Yesterday we had the pep rally. I was a cheerleader, and I’ve been doing that for a couple years,” said competitor Mike Kerr.

For some, it’s about reconnecting with friends.

“Well, I’ve always swam and bocce and golf. So those are the three sports I’ve always participated in and it’s always lots of fun. And like I said, you get to meet people, see people you’ve known for a long time. So it’s a little camaraderie as well,” said competitor¬†Sandi DiBacco.

Others are out for redemption.

“We won it four years in a row until last year, we lost by 1/8 of a point,” Kerr said.

And while the competition is fierce, in the end it’s all about community.

“I did grow up here, I’m from Springfield. I went to school up here at YSU. All of my cousins and family went to YSU. We all graduated from YSU. Our heart is just here. It’s here,” Walker said.

The next set of Community Cup events will start Friday, August 26. The final day of the cup will be September 10.
