YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – A funeral service celebrating the life and legacy of Mr. Charles Winphrie will be held Friday, August 26 at 11:00 a.m. at the New Bethel Baptist Church.
Mr. Winphrie departed this life Thursday, August 18, 2016, at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.
Mr. Winphrie, known to his family and friends as “Mr. Charlie” was born September 16, 1930, in Clinton, South Carolina, a son of Willie and Henrietta Cunningham Winphrie, coming to the valley many years ago.
He served in the U.S. Army and retired from US Steel after 30 years of loyal service.
He was a member of the New Bethel Baptist Church and the proud owner and operator of Charlie’s Auto Service.
He believed in hard work and was an experienced fisherman and hunter.
He will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving children, Sharon (Ronald) Winphrie-Collins, Charles Raymond Winphrie and James D. Prestley, all of Youngstown; his sisters, Ethel Mae James, Annie Pearl Sanders and Savannah Shelton; and his brother, Willie Winphrie, all of Clinton; 14 grandchildren, including three whom he reared, Marc Winphrie, Ronald “Tweed” Winphrie and Sharron J. Winphrie; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a host of other relatives, including a special cousin, Sylvia Renee Powers; and a host of dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sons, Byron Burke and Kenneth Jenkins; his brothers, David, Henry Lee, Casper “Buck” and John Winphrie; and his grandsons, Stephen K. Prestley, Jeroux D. Kimberly and Charles R. Taylor.
Friends may call Thursday, August 25 from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the J.E. Washington Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends Friday, August 26 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the church.
