CAMPBELL, Ohio (WKBN) – A Youngstown man was charged with extortion after police say he wouldn’t leave until a woman in the Campbell McDonald’s drive-thru line gave him cash.
The 18-year-old Youngstown State University student told police she was in line at the drive-thru on McCartney Road around 7:30 a.m. Monday when she was approached by an unknown man who asked her for money. She told police that the man asked her to give him the change that she had in the car and he would let her go. He left only after she gave him the money, according to a police report.
Police found a man matching the suspect’s description walking on McCartney Road near 12th Street. The suspect, identified as 42-year-old James Williams, then got into a car driven by an elderly man.
Officers stopped the driver — an 81-year-old man who said he didn’t know Williams but had agreed to give him a ride. Williams was arrested and taken to Mahoning County Jail after being identified by the woman.
She told police that Williams claimed to be out of gas and that his daughter had walked to BP gas station for help.
Williams is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday on the charge.
