NILES, Ohio (WKBN) – The Niles Police Department recently reactivated its drug unit, and the Niles Special Investigations Drug Unit conducted its first raid early Tuesday morning.
Police searched an apartment on Bellair Court, where they say they made several undercover drug buys over the last couple of months. The Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Trumbull-Ashtabula Group assisted in the raid.
Marlan Delshon Williams, Sr., aka Bo, was arrested. The 24 year old is charged with three counts of drug trafficking.
Police also reported seizing suspected crack cocaine, prescription drugs and cash from the apartment.
It was the city’s first raid since bringing back officers in July who had been laid off, and restoring those special functions in the department.
“It’s definitely important, because it did come from some community involvement, and it did come as a direct result of community support of levy, putting police and fire back to work,” Niles Police Capt. John Marshall said.
While Williams was off to jail and will be in court Wednesday morning, the city feels the raid also sent a quick message.
“If you’re thinking about selling dope in the city of Niles, think again,” Marshall said. “This is step one. Step two is gonna follow. There are several special investigations currently in progress, and this is not the last time you’re going to see a door kicked in at 7 a.m.”
Police said Niles residents who suspect drug activity can submit tips to Drugtips@thecityofniles.com.
