NILES, Ohio (WKBN) – The Niles Football Mothers Club members say they’re ready for football season, even after a devastating fire that destroyed the club’s merchandise stand.
The Dragon Wagon, along with about $5,000 worth of merchandise, was completely destroyed after last week’s suspicious fire.
Michele Golias, member of the Niles Football Mothers Club, picked up a truck full of gear Thursday morning to restock the Dragon Wagon. She said because of help from the community, they won’t have to miss the first home game of the season.
“We’ve had more people reach out to us, asking how they can help, what they can do to help us. It’s just, it’s just so overwhelming. It just proves how much the community loves Niles football,” she said.
The season has only five home games. Golias said there’s not enough time to reorder everything, and the merchandise is limited right now, but the moms are happy with what they were able to put together.
“I have a t-shirt, a hoodie and crew neck sweatshirt. That was one of the original designs that we had out, and that was one of the only designs that we had before,” she said.
The Dragon Wagon raises money for a season-ending banquet to celebrate the football team and cheerleaders. At this point, the district is not letting the club rebuild the Dragon Wagon, but the new version of the stand will be ready to greet fans.
“I think all are overjoyed, though, that we persevered through and that we have a tent and that we have something up there to sell for people,” she said. “This is Dragon town, and that’s what they look for, their Dragon gear,” Golias said.
