PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Philadelphia police have identified an officer who was struck by a hit-and-run driver while conducting a traffic stop.

Police say Sgt. Joseph Cain Jr. was standing next to his vehicle when he was hit early Thursday morning in Manayunk.

The driver has been identified as Colin Murphy. The 21-year-old Schwenksville man also is accused of damaging a police cruiser before taking off.

Authorities say a tow truck driver who was in the area monitoring his scanner, spotted the suspect and alerted police.

Murphy faces numerous charges including aggravated assault while driving under the influence, criminal mischief and driving under the influence.

Cain remains hospitalized in stable condition.

The 55-year-old is a 26-year veteran of the force.
