CLEVELAND, Ohio (WKBN) – Prosecutors say a former Ohio police officer raped a 7-year-old girl.
According to CBS affiliate WOIO, Carl Kannenburg faces charges of rape and kidnapping.
Prosecutors say the crime happened at University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. According to the indictment, Kannenberg sexually abused the child two times. The first charge lists the location as Kannenberg’s Medina County home, happening at some point between Sept. 1, 2015 and Jan. 31, 2016. The second charge, which happened between Feb. 1 and Feb. 3, 2016, does not list a location.
The 43-year-old man appeared in court Wednesday morning, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Kannenburg was originally arrested in July.
Hospital employees helped report the crime.
“Patient safety is our highest priority,” UH said in a statement. “UH takes the safety of our patients very seriously. We are continually refining and strengthening our protocols to maintain a safe environment for our patients and their families.”
Kannenburg was previously employed as a police officer in Montville Township and most recently as a probation officer with the Wayne County Municipal Court.
