CORTLAND, Ohio (WKBN) – More than 130 high school football players from around the Valley have already been nominated for our Big 22 this year. A few of those kids proved to be serious contenders during the first week of football.
Case and point…in Cortland Friday night. Lakeview Senior Jatise Garrison put on a show against Campbell. The Bulldogs wideout took advantage of the new turf… reeling in seven passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns.
Garrison has high expectations, and was asked how he’d grade his performance.
“Poorly. I’m not really impressed,” said Garrison. I had a dropped ball in the 3rd quarter around the 40, and coming into my senior year I don’t want to drop any passes. I just did what i was taught to do, nothing really special about it in my eyes. Apparently it was something big to everybody else. I just do what me and Zack are trained to do, he fives me the ball, I catch it.”
Other standouts that caught the attention of Sports Team 27 in the opening weekend of the season:
Wilmington senior Spencer DeMedal scored four touchdowns Friday night helping the Hounds upset Sharon.
Champion quarterback Brandon Allen passed for nearly 350 yards and accounted for six touchdowns in the Flashes Week One victory over Waterloo.
And Columbiana’s Mitch Davdison was our Player of the Game from Friday night. The TWO time Big 22 alumni threw three touchdown passes, ran for four more, and racked up more than 350 total yards in the Clippers win over Western Reserve in our Game of the Week on FOX Youngstown.
