Preparations underway at Canfield Fairgrounds

The Canfield Fair runs from Wednesday, August 31 through Monday, September 5

Even though the gates don't officially open until Wednesday, the Canfield Fairgrounds was busy Monday as preparations are underway.

CANFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) – Less than 48 hours away from the start of the 170th Canfield Fair, the fairgrounds are already busy as crews prepare for opening day on Wednesday.

“It gets in your blood. I’m a Canfield person. I lived in Canfield, been coming to the fair every day of my life since I was four, and it’s just something you fall in love with,” said Director of Entertainment George Roman III.

Trailers and food trucks set up throughout the day on Monday.

“We build a city in nine days. Two days for prep, one day for tear down but the six days in between to have close to 500,000 people, and that’s all the volunteers, all the vendors, all the exhibitors, you name it,” Roman said.

There are some new additions on the south side of the grounds.

“We’re going to have a stage set up and we’re going to have vocalists, we’re going to have instrumental bands playing down there. They’ll play every day and it will all be local talent,” Roman said.

Along with the music, there will be 50 rides and amusement attractions.

“There’s going to be a lot of familiar rides here, you know, we have so many rides,” said Kim Bates-Bozich, co-owner of Bates Amusement. “It seems every time we take one out, someone will say, ‘Oh no, what did you do with this ride,’ or ‘Where did that one go?’ So we try to bring something for everyone.”

Rides will be inspected Tuesday to ensure that they are safe.

“All of our rides are licensed by the State of Ohio, which requires a mandatory inspection as well as random inspections throughout the course of the season,” Bates-Bozich said.

Canfield Police say that they are expecting a hassle-free week, but will be proactive to make sure everyone stays safe on and off the fairgrounds.

“It should be smooth sailing, it’s the same as every year,” said Det. William DiFrangia. “We just try to get the word out to people to slow down, watch for stopped traffic, watch for pedestrians, put the phones down.”

As fair as traffic restrictions in the area, DiFrangia says there isn’t much to worry about.

“Nothing regarding road construction, but there are the typical different avenues into the fair; Raccoon Road, Leffingwell, State Route 446. Those are in place for people to get in and out quickly and get away from some of the congestion, which could be 224, 46, Fairgound Boulevard.”

The fair runs from Wednesday, August 31 through Monday, September 5 at the fairgrounds at 7265 Columbiana-Canfield Road. It’s open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. For more information, visit the Canfield Fair’s website.
