YOUNGSTOWN, OH (WKBN) – The first week of high school football in the Valley was capped off by Ursuline snapping Benedictine’s 17-game regular season winning streak late last night by blocking an extra point in double overtime.
Before we can set out eyes to Week 2, we have to take a look back at the best of the best from Week 1. Sports Team 27 shot 18 games this week, and we have cut it down to the five best Plays of the Week:
Edition 1 of our Plays of the Week kicks off with a trip to Poland. Valley Christian hosted Lowellville. During the first play of the game, Domonhic Jennings went deep to Jamynk Jackson, who went up twisting in the air to get a foot in bounds! The Butch Jennings era at Valley started well with a big win against Lowellville on Saturday.
Number four takes us to New Castle. Farrell, taking on Neshannock, was scoreless in the first. A handoff went to Braxton Chapmon up the middle and was met by four Lancers, but Chapmon muscled his way through the resistance. With 54 yards for the touchdown, Chapmon had the big play of the game, but the Lancers still took the win.
Number three takes us to our LIVE Game of the Week at Niles. Mark Waid in the shotgun fired to senior Nick Hall in the flat. The coaches said to play to the whistle, and Hall, never quitting, got the score and number three in our Plays of the Week.
We head to West Middlesex for number two. Big Reds Josh Porterfield scrambled on fourth down, trying to lob one over the head of Robert Besser, who snatched it out of the air. With a block by Joseph Bornes, Besser was able to go the distance for the score. Blue Devils took the lead, and they got the win over West Middlesex.
Finally, we go to Cortland for number one. Lakeview opened with new turf and new quarterback Zach Rogers, who heaved one looking for Justise Garrison, who somehow got the foot down while falling out of bounds. He hung onto the ball, and Lakeview got the win over Campbell. Garrison gets our Play of the Week in Week 1.
