60 mile yard sale helps bring traffic back to Route 7

Many people said the yard sale wasn't about profit, but about strengthening the community

Communities from Hubbard to Conneaut held a 60 mile yard sale for the third year in a row to help revitalize Route 7.

HARTFORD TWP., Ohio (WKBN) – Communities along Route 7, from Hubbard to Conneaut, held a 60 mile yard sale for the third year in a row to help revitalize Route 7.

Route 7 used to be the major road from Lake Erie through the eastern edge of Ohio, until the Route 11 Expressway was built in the ’60s and ’70s.

Glasses, shoes, books and games were just some of the thousands of items you could find at this year’s yard sale.

“There was a lot of collectors. They’re looking for the tin toys, the collectibles, the tools, the guy stuff. Of course it went real fast,” said John Olsen of Hartford Township.

Many people got up especially early to make sure they got the most out of the 60 miles.

“Oh 7 a.m. I had horns honking, people at my driveway, road full. ‘Where are you? I’m in the shower, i’m not quite ready,'” said Melissa Smith of Brookfield.

It’s a community phenomenon that keeps on growing.

“Just the traffic today could make up for months of not having the traffic here. But yeah, Route 11 did take a lot of the traffic because people don’t use Route 7 to go north anymore,” said Jason Gordon of Hartford Township.

And it’s not about the profit, it’s about strengthening the community.

“It’s great to get involved in it. You get to meet people, it’s good advertisement, good public relations for the township,” Olsen said.
