STRUTHERS, Ohio (WKBN) – After trailing by two touchdowns in the second half, a 1-yard sneak by Niles quarterback Tyler Srbinovich gave the Red Dragons a one-point lead midway through the fourth quarter in Struthers. It held up, as Niles defeated the Wildcats, 21-20, to improve to 2-1.
Struthers, which dropped to 2-1, missed a 26-yard field goal with just 16 seconds remaining in the contest.
Struthers led Niles 20-6 in the third quarter keyed by two rushing touchdowns by Wildcats quarterback A.J. Musolino, who finished with 127 yards on 22 carries. He scored on a 3-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and a 1-yard TD run with just 52 seconds remaining in the second period. Nate Richards also scored on a 15-yard run in the third quarter to push Struthers’ lead to 14 points.
But Niles answered all night.
After falling behind 7-0 in the second quarter, a 28-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Srbinovich to Jasson Faison cut its deficit to one point. Then trailing 20-6 in the third, Red Dragons backup quarterback Jordan Soda connected with Marion Pearson for a 5-yard TD pass to make it 20-14 after a successful two-point conversion. That set up Srbinovich’s sneak, which capped a nine-play, 61-yard scoring drive with 6:12 to go in the fourth.
Niles will travel to Youngstown East in week four. Struthers will visit Jefferson.
