YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Youngstown Schools CEO Krish Mohip hired a new transportation director Friday, hoping to improve the district’s busing problems.

Colleen Murphy-Penk will begin working as the new transportation director on Wednesday.

She is the former transportation director for the Austintown School District. Two of her employees from Austintown will be coming to Youngstown with her.

“Every day it’s going to get a little bit better. She’s going to come in there, she’s going to provide that oversight,” Mohip said. “She has that experience to put us on the path where we can be sustainable for years to come, and we don’t have to repeat these problems year-in and year-out.”

Youngstown City Schools have been receiving numerous complaints from concerned parents and caretakers about the busing system.

One father said his 6-year-old daughter was dropped off on the other side of town and had to knock on doors for help.

Other parents have said their children are not getting picked up at all. Some complained that the bus stops are too far from the children’s homes.

A bus driver from the district spoke out about the challenges drivers face. He said the routes are too long and need to be more consistent.

Mohip has said the system is in shambles, and promised to look into the issues and correct them.
