CORTLAND, Ohio – Richard L. Spencer, 82, passed away Sunday afternoon, September 18, 2016 at Signature Health Care in Warren, Ohio, after a battle with Leukemia.
Richard was born on February 26, 1934, at home in Cortland, Ohio; a son of the late Reed C. Spencer and Hazel M. (Karr) Spencer.
He was a lifetime resident of Cortland and has lived in the same house he was born in with his parents and later with his sister, Marlene, and brother-in-law, Ralph Rufener.
He attended Cortland City Schools and found employment at Landmark Farm Bureau/Shaffer Feed Mill in Cortland for thirty-five years.
He always enjoyed a good cup of coffee and loved playing the harmonica. He always greeted people with a smile and a hearty hello. He was well known for his fun sense of humor and loved to please people. He never met a stranger and was very helpful around the community. He helped run errands and lending a hand to the needy and widows in Cortland.
In March of 1988, he was honored by the Cortland City Council for his contributions to the city of Cortland.
In his free time, Richard loved to spend time with his dogs, spend time in the ravine behind his house, and loved to spend time with his nieces and nephews.
Richard will be deeply missed by his sister, Virginia Stein of Cortland, Ohio; his sisters-in-law, Faye Spencer of Cape Girardeau, Missouri and Jean Spencer of Phoenix, Arizona; a brother-in-law Ralph Rufener of Cortland, Ohio and eleven nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert, Fred, Ben, and Gordon Spencer; his sisters, Helen Skinner and Marlene Rufener; two sisters-in-law, Helen and Ruth Spencer and three brothers-in-law, Frank Stein, Otis Skinner and Jim Crawford.
Funeral services for Richard will be held on Monday September 26, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. at Lane Family Funeral Homes – Shafer-Winans Chapel located at 164 North High Street Cortland, Ohio 44410.
Family and friends may call from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. before the services at the funeral home.
Burial will take place at Crown Hill Burial Park in Vienna Township.
