YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – We are halfway though the high school football season, and that means our Big 22 Contenders have just five weeks left to prove they belong in this year’s class.
The following are just a few of the standouts that caught the attention of Sports Team 27 last week:
Sharon Junior Ziyon Strickland scored four times last Friday night in all three phases of the game. He caught two touchdowns on offense, returned a punt for a score and picked off a pass on defense, taking it 32 yards for another touchdown. Strickland is now three receptions, 26 yards and one touchdown away from breaking the Mercer County record in all three categories.
Sharpsville got a big win and a Big 22 performance from junior Bobby Besser. Number 33 scored on a 69-yard touchdown pass and also rushed for more 100 yards in the blue devils 32-29 win over Reynolds.
Nobody had more reason to smile last week than Tanner Pearl. Columbiana’s senior tailback ran for 121 yards in their victory over Mineral Ridge. Pearl scored a staggering six touchdowns in that win.
And, South Range Junior Mathias Combs returned a punt 66 yards last Friday night, but he was far from done. Just over two minutes later, he delivered again. Combs also notched an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. His effort helped the Raiders remain unbeaten, with a 55-8 win over Lisbon in our Game of the Week.
