Last Meeting: Western Reserve jumped out to a 26-7 lead before McDonald closed to gap to 26-20 thanks to a Jake Reckard touchdown catch late in the third quarter. However, Jack Cappabianca bruised his way into the endzone with just over 5 minutes to play to give the Mahoning County’s Blue Devils a 14-point lead and an eventual 34-27 victory.

Game Notes: McDonald opened the 2016 season in uncharacteristic fashion with a 1-3 mark. However, the Blue Devils have churned out a pair of wins to even their record at 3-3.

Two weeks ago, the Devils ran for over 300-yards, including 122 from Alex Cintron in their week five win over United. Joe Sudol returned two special teams kicks (punt, kickoff).

Last Friday, McDonald’s ground game was on display again against Jackson-Milton as Cintron picked up where he left off with 107 yards and a score. Joe Celli gained 84 stripes on the ground also (TD). As a team, the Blue Devils moved the chains 16 times and compiled a total of 301 yards of total offense. Dylan Portolese completed 7 of 8 for 76 yards (TD pass from Sudol). The defense held the Jays to 134 yards.

McDonald has not won a road game since October 30, 2015 (at Lowellville). They’re 0-3 this season.

Western Reserve also got off to a 1-3 start but have righted the ship to 3-3 within the past two weeks. Reserve’s three losses came against teams who have combined to currently have a 14-4 record (Columbiana, South Range, Springfield).

The Blue Devils’ running back Jack Cappabianca scored 5 of his 8 rushing touchdowns within the last three weeks. During that stretch, he’s gained 345 yards on the ground while averaging 9.1 yards per carry. Reserve’s quarterback Dominic Velasquez has completed 50% or more in four of his six games this season. He’s also connected on 2-touchdown passes in five games so far.

Reserve has averaged 404.2 yards of total offense this season. The defense has allowed an average of 260.0 yards.
