WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKBN) – The Austintown and Youngstown police departments are receiving funding to hire new officers, according to Congressman Tim Ryan’s office.

Ryan announced Monday that $7.2 million had been allocated to Ohio police departments to hire 59 new police officers. The funds were made available through the U.S. Department of Justice’s COPS Hiring Program.

Locally, Austintown Township is receiving $250,000 for two officers. The Youngstown Police Department will receive $747,368 for eight officers.

“I am pleased to announce that these funds will allow our communities to hire additional law enforcement officers and ensure the protection and security of our families and friends,” Ryan said. “At a time when our local municipalities are continuing to be squeezed by budget cuts in Columbus and Washington D.C., it is still important that our towns have the protection they need. We must do all we can to make sure our neighborhoods are safe.”

The COPS Hiring Program is designed to advance public safety through community policing by addressing departments’ officer needs. The program provides funds directly to law enforcement agencies to hire new or rehire career law enforcement officers and to increase their community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts.
