Jury reaches verdict in Austintown child endangering case

Devin Telego is accused of causing severe injuries to his 3-month-old son back in January

Jury selection got underway Monday morning in the child endangering trial of Devin Telego of Austintown.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The jury reached a verdict Tuesday afternoon in a Mahoning County child endangering case.

Devin Telego was found guilty on one count of child endangerment, but the jury was deadlocked on the other charges.

Telego is accused of hurting his 3-month-old son in January. At the time, police say Telego told them he had only bounced the baby on his knee, but doctors discovered head injuries to the child so severe that he may be disabled.

“We want justice for these victims. I really do believe that the jury got it right in this case and the state is satisfied,” said Prosecutor Steve Maszczak.

The baby is doing better now.

“They can’t give doctors any feedback, but my understanding is he has made a recovery and hopefully, the long-term effects will be minimized,” Maszczak said.

Closing arguments wrapped late Tuesday morning. The jury deliberated for about six hours.

Telego is back in jail Tuesday night and could face up to 36 months in prison. He will be sentenced in court Wednesday morning.
