Students and teachers at Canfield High School celebrate Halloween

CANFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) – Canfield Schools are banning clown costumes this Halloween after threatening posts have been circulating social media.

Clown costumes will be banned during all Halloween activities.

The district was prompted to ban the costumes in light of recent scary clown sightings in the area and across the country.

In a statement, Superintendent Alex Geordan said:

While there is no indication of a threat, we are being proactive in our Halloween efforts. The safety of our students and staff is our number one priority and the elimination of these costumes can help our children have an enjoyable Halloween without any fears.

An Instagram account called “Youngstown Clowns” posted a list of local schools it claims clowns will go to. Those schools are working with law enforcement and school resource officers.

In Girard, police have been on the lookout for people dressed as clowns who were seen following a school bus.

New Haven Public Schools in Connecticut also banned clown costumes for Halloween this year.
