Ryan: extradition of accused Newton Falls killer still in works

The Congressman called getting Claudia Hoerig back to the U.S. from Brazil a "convoluted process"

Congressman Tim Ryan - Youngstown, Ohio

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – On Friday, Ohio Congressman Tim Ryan commented on the extradition of Claudia Hoerig.

Hoerig is under arrest in Brazil, as she is the only suspect in her husband’s murder nine years ago when Air Force Major Karl Hoerig was brutally murdered at his Newton Falls home in 2007. Shortly after, Claudia went back to her home country of Brazil — away from the reach of the U.S. legal system.

On April 8 of this year, she was placed on the FBI’s Most Wanted Fugitive’s list.

Congressman Ryan said even though Brazil is cooperating with the U.S., this still isn’t an easy thing to do.

“This is something we work on every single week,” he said. “You know, we’re making calls whether it’s to Brazil or our folk’s at the state department here. And honestly, it’s a convoluted process down there to try and get her here.”

Ryan doesn’t know exactly when Hoerig will be back, but he said that they’ll continue to press the issue and hopefully she will be extradited soon.
