STRUTHERS, Ohio (WKBN) – Mayor Terry Stocker announced that the Struthers City Jail will permanently close on November 1.
Stocker said he considered the Jail Facility Compliance Audit, conducted over the past several months, when deciding to close the jail.
A consultant came in March and determined that the jail was not meeting federal standards for a 12-day facility. He listed a lack of cameras and microphones, and bad lines of sight as some of the safety concerns. The facility is also over 50 years old and outdated.
Improvements to the building were going to be costly.
The jail facility, which requires inmates to pay in order to stay there, is just breaking even and not making any money.
The mayor cited operational and financial issues that would prevent the facility from being able to run safely.
After the city jail closes, Struthers Police will send inmates to the Mahoning County Jail.
