NORTH CANTON, Ohio – Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 16, at Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Edward Owen Williams, who passed away quietly Wednesday afternoon, October 12, 2016, at Saint Luke Lutheran Community in North Canton, Ohio.
Edward was born May 8, 1933, in Wheatland, Pennsylvania, the son of John and Gladys Williams.
He attended Austintown public schools, graduating from Fitch High School in 1951.
He served two years in the U.S. Navy and on June 6, 1959, married Sandra Irene Schmidt of West Austintown.
He was a long time member of Austintown Community United Church of Christ and served the church in many volunteer positions through the decades. More recently, he was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Youngstown and Uniontown United Methodist Church.
Edward retired from Packard Electric Division of General Motors in 1990 after working as a supervisor for 25 years.
He was a dedicated and active member of Meander Masonic Lodge in North Jackson, being honored as Mason of the Year three times. He became a member of Columbiana’s Allen Lodge 276, as the lodges merged. He earned his honorary 33rd Masonic degree with the Valley of Canton Scottish Rite chapter. He was also an active member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows at Canfield Lodge 155 and Lions Club International of Hartville. He celebrated his Welsh heritage with St. David’s Society and was active in the Mahoning Valley Civil War Roundtable.
Edward enjoyed reading, woodworking, presenting literary monologues and tinkering with his 1951 MGTD. He and his wife made traveling an important and frequent aspect of their family traditions. The couple had made many trips abroad before his wife became ill in 2004.
He was extremely proud of his three grandchildren.
Edward is survived by two sons, John (Jill) Williams of North Canton, Ohio and Scott (Teresa) Williams of Abingdon, Virginia and three grandchildren, Zachary, Graeme and Samantha Williams.
Edward was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra; his sister, JoAnn Carson and his parents.
Family and friends may call from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 15, where a Masonic service will be held at 6:00 p.m. and from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 16, prior to the 4:00 p.m. funeral service at Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel.
The family asks that contributions be made in his memory to the Civil War Trust for the preservation of battlefields.
A private burial will be held on Monday morning with family at Brunstetter Cemetery in Austintown.
